Chantix Warnings and Precautions
-
Serious neuropsychiatric symptoms have occurred in patients being treated with Chantix. Some cases may have been complicated by the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal in patients who stopped smoking; however, some of these symptoms have occurred in patients who continued to smoke. All patients being treated with Chantix should be observed for neuropsychiatric symptoms including changes in behavior, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal ideation and suicidal behavior. These symptoms, as well as worsening of pre-existing psychiatric illness, have been reported in some patients attempting to quit smoking while taking Chantix in the post-marketing experience. Patients with serious psychiatric illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder did not participate in the pre-marketing studies of Chantix and the safety and efficacy of Chantix in such patients has not been established.
Drug Interactions with Chantix
- Based on varenicline characteristics and clinical experience to date, Chantix has no clinically meaningful pharmacokinetic drug interactions.
Chantix Overdose
- Very little information about overdosing on Chantix is available, probably because it is a relatively new medication. Of course, it is reasonable to expect that a Chantix overdose may cause any of the usual side effects seen with the drug.
- It is not known what the best way is to treat a Chantix overdose. Therefore, treatment will typically involve supportive care, which consists of treating the symptoms that occur as a result of the overdose. For instance, if an overdose caused high blood pressure (hypertension), supportive treatment would include medications to lower blood pressure.
Missed Dose of Chantix
-
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. Be sure to take the medicine after eating.
